In January, the ACLP organized an information session for policy makers involved in the process of designing the future regulation around New Genomic Techniques at the European Parliament level.
The objective was to present them with this industry-led initiative aiming at avoiding monopolistic situations that can occur with the development of patents, with a special focus on how small and medium enterprises benefit greatly from accessing innovation through such platforms.
The session was well received by participants and an open dialogue took place with representatives from the membership of the ACLP. Policy makers were especially interested in the details of the functioning of the license agreement, its articulation with national and European patent laws and its scope (elements covered by the platform). The discussion shifted to the future and what to expect if there is an increase in number of plants obtained through NGTs.
It was highlighted that the platform does not advocate for patenting and has been set up to be one of the tools to further drive innovation in plant breeding by providing customized solutions to the challenges of accessing patented traits and securing access to genetic material for breeding purposes.
