ACLP expands its scope to include ornamental, fruit and forest crops

The Agricultural Crop Licensing Platform (ACLP) has expanded the scope of crops covered by its activities to include ornamental, fruit and forest crops, in addition to agricultural crops.

Launched in 2023, the platform was designed as a framework that could evolve over time in response to the needs of breeders and the seed sector. This extension represents a logical next phase in that development and was approved unanimously by ACLP members.

With this expansion, breeders across Europe now have broader access to a single, trusted licensing platform to disclose patented traits and access protected innovations in a fair, transparent and secure manner. The ACLP complements existing licensing solutions by serving breeders of crops beyond vegetables.

“Now, every breeder in Europe has the possibility to become a member of a licensing platform to display patented traits and/or to access patented traits of interest in a facilitated, fair and secure manner. Both licensing platforms are complementary: vegetable breeders can turn to the International Licensing Platform (ILP), while breeders of all other crops can rely on the ACLP.”

Claudia Hallebach, Chair of the ACLP

Currently, the ACLP covers around 95% of patented traits in commercial agricultural crop varieties. The PINTO database, hosted by Euroseeds, will be updated to reflect the newly added crop categories in the near future.

Open to all breeding companies operating within its territory, the ACLP offers a standardised licensing framework that ensures efficiency, legal certainty and predictability. This approach is particularly valuable for small and medium-sized breeders and contributes to a competitive and innovation-friendly seed sector.

The ACLP Board is continuing to work on the platform’s further development, with additional updates expected in the coming weeks.
